Remo Three touched down quietly on the front lawn of the now-empty home as Flyers Two and Three drifted silently overhead. Madison and Jennifer spread out to either side of the aircraft and waited as Coraline and Adam walked to the front porch of the home. There were no animals in sight, but they could hear dogs up and down the road barking. The sounds of screen doors opening and banging shut could be heard as neighbors went outside to investigate the cause of the ruckus. Soon whole families were outdoors pointing at the saucer-shaped aircraft parked on their ex-neighbor’s lawn and the two floating fighter aircraft above.

Jennifer spoke into her comDev, “Well, so much for our secret mission.”

An old woman carrying a large cup of coffee, hair rolled up in curlers and large fluffy bunny slippers walked from the house next door and asked Madison, “Are you the new neighbors?”

“No ma’am. We’re here to fix the water heater.”

“Oh. Okay. That’s nice,” the woman answered as she turned to walk away. Waving to the neighbors across the street she yelled, “It’s okay. They’re fixin’ the water heater!”

Hayley overheard the conversation in her headset. She laughed, “Surely, they didn’t buy that!”

“Believe me, I’ve seen worse. Remind me to tell you about the bobcat.”

Coraline waited for a moment, then tilted her face to the sky and closed her eyes. With hands out, she opened her lips and released what sounded like a high-pitched trill. This went on for a least a minute before a calico cat broke from the bushes across the street and ran straight to Coraline. Trailing her swiftly were two large German Shepherds and a Dalmatian. The large dogs would have bowled her over in the excitement of their greeting had she not held up her hand and stopped them. They obeyed that hand gesture and sat immediately. Taking Sugar into her arms, she kissed and stroked the cat who assuredly recognize her as ‘family.’ Speaking to the dogs, she said, “If you guys need to go potty, do it now. We’re going to take a trip.”

The three canines ran to the fire hydrant on the corner and took turns doing their business as Madison and Jennifer laughed.

Jennifer said, “That’s a pretty good trick, there, Baby Sister. You’ll have to teach me that one. Now, let’s load ‘em up.”

Coraline ran for the aircraft with Sugar and the dogs following her single file. Madison shrugged her shoulders and said, “Mission accomplished. Let’s go home.”
